Prof. Ilan Sela passed away in May 2017

לזכר פרופ' אילן סלע

פרופ' אילן סלע, וירולוג, מבכירי החוקרים של הפקולטה לחקלאות ברחובות הובא למנוחות אתמול אחר הצהריים. בן 81 במותו.

פרופ' אילן סלע היה איש חזון, ראה תמיד למרחוק, ושאף למתוח את גבולות המדע לכיוונים יישומיים. הוא היה חלוץ הביולוגיה המולקולארית בפקולטה לחקלאות, ובתחילת שנות השמונים היה מיוזמי ומקימי מרכז אוטו ורבורג לביוטכנולוגיה בחקלאות.

אילן עסק במחקר ממש עד הזמן האחרון. הוא זכה לראות חלק מחלומותיו המדעיים מתגשמים, כאשר טכנולוגיות חדשניות מאפשרות היום לבצע העברת גנים מאורגניזם אחד לאחר תוך שליטה על תהליכים, ותוך יכולת לבטא גנים או להשתיקם. פרס קיי לחדשנות אותו קיבל פרופ' אילן סלע בשנת 2013 עבור מציאות פתרון להפרעת התמוטטות מושבות דבורי הדבש הוא אחת הדוגמאות לכך.

אילן היה המורה הראשון והמיתולוגי לביולוגיה מולקולרית בפקולטה לחקלאות, והעמיד דורות רבים של תלמידים הפזורים היום בארגונים וחברות שונות העוסקים במגוון תחומים של הביולוגיה.
